New blog design to come

Posted in Arieanna & Ianiv

So, things are kinda slow in the posting arena lately for a number of reasons:
1. I have work to do this weekend!
2. We are going out a lot this weekend (will post on where, no worries)
3. We are redesigning the blog!

I know Ianiv wants to post more details, but basically we are looking for something a bit more sophisticated – photography, custom elements, etc. So far we have a custom template that Ianiv made, and most of the backend will stay the same. But the new design features some nice elements and we will add more content too (about us, contact, etc). We hope (!!) to have at least some of it up and running by Monday.

Almost a free ride

Posted in Around Vancouver

Translink, the company that runs the public transit here in Vancouver, seems to be having some problems with their fare system today: if you try to pay using the prepaid fare cards the machine rejects the card. So this morning I tried to pay, the machine rejected the card and the driver let me on the bus. Later, when I went to the dentist the same thing happened and I was starting to get pretty happy, I didn’t have to pay to ride the bus today!
On the way back from the dentist I had to take two buses. Same story on the first bus, but when I got on the second bus and the machine rejected the card the driver asked to see it. I told him that I know they have a problem with their system thinking he would let me on without paying, but instead he kept my card and printed a new one for me :( He did that to everyone else.
So my free ride was over. I guess the driver did the right thing, but I feel cheated…

Peak at Star Wars Episode III

Posted in Movies

Here’s your full peak at what’s to come from Star Wars Episode III and its infamous text-crawl.

War! The republic is crumbling
under attacks by the ruthless
Sith Lord, Count Dooku.
There are heroes on both sides.
Evil is everywhere.

In a stunning move, the
fiendsih droid leader, General
Grievous, has swept into the
Republic capital and kidnapped
Chancellor Palpatine, leader of
the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatist Droid Army
attemps to flee the besieged
capital with their valuable
hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a
desparate mission to rescue the
captive Chancellor…

Thanks Boing Boing. Sounds good! Hopefully the move will outshine the last two attempts!

SSEP not so bad

Posted in Arieanna & Ianiv

So the SSEP is not so bad. Huge improvement over the EMG.

Here is how it goes (top half SSEP only):
-They take a whole crapload of measurements of your head (apparently mine is quite large but very symmetrical)
-They use a red marker to pinpoint various point on your head, collarbone and neck
-2 points of the head, the neck, the collarbones and the grounding areas are scoured using a gel kinda like what you use to scrub the sink
-A conducting cream is applied to the areas and pads are put there to measure the nerve conduction
-The arm measurements are taken (my right arm is longer apparently)
-Then this little electric shocker thing is used to shock your nerve continuously for 4 minutes. Repeat on second arm.

Was not so bad. No needles. The shocking was uncomfortable, but relaxing and attempting to mimic sleep actually makes the results better and the experience easier.

Nonetheless, I did reward myself with a nice walk down to Trees and a coffee and lovely lovely raspberry scone – we all know I love Trees.

The art of the pen

Posted in Art

“Madmeg” Margot’s art – an interesting look into talent I definitely do not have. I have to really appreciate the detail that went into this. Even my doodles were so bad that I wanted to scribble them out!

The French artist had this to say: “Since the beginning of 2001, I draw in small notebooks 11 cm X 15 cm (approximately), always with a ball point pen, always on same paper, always in black. I contrained myself never to tear a page off, what is done… is done. I put the date at the beginning and the end of each notebook. Each day (or almost) I spend one hour or two drawing in these notebooks. At this day, I made approximately 450 pages distributed in 12 notebooks.”

If you go directly to the artist’s site you will get a few minute’s worth of the appreciation that I have for this artist. I think the ability to develop such life out of pencil is really amazing. I haven’t yet decided which one I like the most, but I am partial to those renditions that integrate text with the pictures (this may become one of my top faves)

SIMpill – SMS reminders to take your pills!

Posted in Gadgets & Gizmos

Gizmodo : SIMpill: Medicine Bottle with SMS Reminders

med bottle

Maybe I need one of these!!

Here is the pst from over at Gizmodo [via MedGadget ]

A South African doctor has developed the SIMpill, a pill bottle that uses SMS to monitor how often pills are being taken and can send alerts to a patient’s phone if they have missed a dose by mistake. Each time the cap is removed, a small cellular transmitter in the bottle sends a secure SMS to a central server, which stores information about the intervals in which the prescription should be administered. If something goes wrong with the dosage, the service sends a message to the patient’s cell phone, alerting them of the discrepancy. Since many long-term infectious diseases become resistant to medication if they miss a dose, the SIMpill can make it easier to maintain a more structured regimen.
