February 29th – a little on leap years

Posted in Funny

We are just at the cusp of what would be February 29th in a leap year. So I wanted to look into it.

A leap year is inserted every 4 years so that the calendar and solar years can come into synch. However, it’s not perfect, so we skip a leap year every 3/4 centuries. Complicated!

Julius Caesar was the first to insert extra days to months to adjust the calendar to the seasons, to put in one extra day per four years, and to have the 365 day calendar.

After Caesar died, the calendar was mistakenly shifted every 3 years until it was corrected in 8 AD. The seasons shifted with all of this until the calendar was “reformed so that a leap day would occur in any year that is divisible by 4 but not divisible by 100 except when the year is divisible by 400.”

The 400 year cycle and the calendars have the same week days – February 29, 2004 is a Sunday and February 29, 2404 is a Sunday

The calendar we use now is still off 1 day every 3236 years

The 29th of Feb is also known as Sadie Hawkins Day – a day when women were “allowed” to court their man

The days in the month poem – I bet you didn’t know the last line!

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November;
All the rest have thirty-one
Excepting February alone:
Which hath but twenty-eight, in fine,
Till leap year gives it twenty-nine.

There is a World Wide Leap Year Festival

0.0684% of the world’s population are born on leap year – i.e. are Leapers

When do you celebrate your birthday as a Leaper? February, March, or just darn every day? Most choose February.

Feb 29th 1504, there was a lunar eclipse as Columbus was bargaining with the natives over food supply – the eclipse made him seem powerful
