The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

Posted in Movies

The Santa Clause movies are a staple of my holiday season. And while we’re a fair bit off from that yet, it came to my ear that there is a third movie coming out – The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause - opening on November 3. Martin Short joins the cast as Jack Frost.

Santa (Allen), aka Scott Calvin, is faced with double-duty: how to keep his new family happy, and how to stop Jack Frost from taking over Christmas.

My new job at NowPublic

Posted in Arieanna & Ianiv

I’m really past due writing this post, and Arieanna has been bugging me about it almost every day. But she is right, I should’ve written this a while ago.

The news is that as of September 1st I no longer work at Qumana and I started a new job at NowPublic on September 4th. I’m going to be writing code and helping keep the development team organized. The past 3 weeks have been very busy, getting up to speed with our code, getting to know the developers, and getting used to working with people 9 hours ahead (most of our developers are in Hungary).

I’m really excited to be joining this team. Citizen journalism is something I’ve been increasingly interested over the past couple of years and I’m happy to have the chance to work on a project like NowPublic.

DRM-free recordings from the Philadelphia Symphony

Posted in Art, Music

This is pretty cool. The Philadelphia Orchestra has launched an online store with DRM-free recordings of its performances:

This service allows fans to buy and download files of soundboard recordings from current Philadelphia Orchestra performances very soon after the performance has happened. These audio recordings are mixed and mastered each night by the Orchestra’s sound engineers.

Ok, so another music store. But the files have no copy protection (they say “hackle-free unencrypted files”) and they are offered in two formats: MP3 and Flac. The MP3s are encoded at 256 kbps VBR so the quality is pretty good, but with the Flac files you get the original 44.1 kHz, 16 bit stereo audio.

The price of the recordings I checked was $4.99 for the MP3s and $5.99 for the Flac format (Flac files are larger and presumably cost them more to distribute).

I can’t get my Flickr Minicards

Posted in Arieanna & Ianiv

I’ve read about these Flickr Minicards all over the net today so I decided to get the free sample 10-pack.
You choose your pictures using a simple browser that lets you navigate them by tag or set. The thumbnails are really small so it’s hard to see what pictures you are actually choosing. You then get a chance to adjust how the pictures will be cropped, and finally you can personalize the text on the back of the cards.

So I went through all of this, filled in my shipping info, clicked on the last button and…

“Oops, sorry, something untoward has occurred!”

No Minicards for me :(

And now I’m sick

Wohoo, how’s that for timing. Just when my pain is at its worst, I get the flu!
