Discovery Channel ‘I Love the World’ Campaign

Posted in Marketing, TV

For a few months, we’ve been inspired by a Discovery Channel video campaign, so today I decided to look it up and share it. The ‘I Love the World’ / ‘Boom De Ah Dah’ video, as shown below, was created in April 2008 after Discovery Channel changed their tagline to “The World is Just… Awesome.” A few versions of the videos were made, with altered visuals and lyrics. They all start off with two astronauts looking down on the world, inspired by a vision that never gets old, and break into song. Discovery Channel stars sing about what they consider awesome in the world. Then the whole world then joins in, singing along to the wonders they see:

After Discovery Channel created this inspiring video, which pays homage to its shows and to the world at large, fans were inspired and began making their own ‘I Love the World’ videos on YouTube. Discovery Channel created a playlist on their own website to highlight some of these great videos.

The original campaign was created by 72andSunny for Discovery Channel. It was directed by James Rouse, with further credits here.

And here’s an xkcd Boom De Yada mash-up that Ianiv is just crazy for:

Self portrait and cold landscapes

Posted in Arieanna & Ianiv

Here’s a self-portrait I actually like. I bounced the SB600 off a big white board. It’s not that easy taking self portraits with the D300 because when you use the timer it wants to focus when you press the trigger, not when the timer finishes, so it takes some trial and error to get the focus right. I guess a remote trigger may be in my future.

Today I went for coffee and lunch at Cafe Crema in West Vancouver. After that I walked across the street to take some shots and this is some of what I got. I’m loving the local adjustments in Camera Raw, and how much faster Bridge is now.

I went back to the cafe for another coffee and dessert. A very relaxing day.

WordCamp Whistler

WordCamp Whistler is just around the corner and we need your help to make it the best event this winter. First of all, go sign up if you haven’t done that yet. Or, even better, submit a speaking proposal.

We are also looking for sponsors to help us cover the conference expenses. There are multiple levels of sponsorship packages that you can choose from and they all give you some kind of exposure to all the attendees. If your company is interested in sponsoring this event, or if you know someone who may be interested please visit the sponsorship page for more information.

You can also help us promote WordCamp Whistler by displaying one of our banners on your website.

Sunset, HDR and Dreidel

Posted in Around Vancouver, Photography

A trio of photos from the past few days. First we have two HDR experiments using Photoshop. I tried using Photomatix but I didn’t like the results as much and I feel I have a lot more control and understand what is happening better when using Photoshop.

Sunset taken from Lonsdale Quay. Not as nice as the one we had a few days ago, but beats the grey sky we have now. 7 shots.

North Vancouver
Around the same time as the sunset above, looking north. You can see the new watefront development. 5 shots.

And last, a dreidel. Hannukah is coming up and I saw this little guy on my bookshelf so I decided to take a couple of shots.

The official announcement for WordCamp Whistler is out. It’s on January 24th at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort where they’ve also secured a great group rate.

This site is your official source for WCWhistler information. Check out the speaker page, add your own submission to become a speaker, find out more about sponsorship, and check back for blog updates. You can also follow the action with the RSS feed or by adding @WCWhistler on Twitter.

So go buy your ticket before they sell out. It’s going to be an awesome time.

First 2010 Indy Media Centre Meeting

Posted in Around Vancouver, Events

As a follow up to the whole Social Media and the 2010 games frenzy of the past couple of weeks a meeting was organized to discuss the possibility of creating a media centre for independed, non-accredited people to use to cover the event. We met last night at the Raincity Studios HQ and we had a great turnout.

I’m not going to recap the meeting here. For that you can go to Raul’s post where he did a great job of live-blogging the session. There is a webpage/wiki with more information about the project and I also attempted to do a live stream using Qik on my iPhone, which mostly worked, and got about half of the meeting online for your viewing pleasure.

The bottom line is that there is a lot of interest from a lot of people and various organizations. We have a lot of questions and a lot of ideas and we need to start working on figuring out what we intend to do and how we are going to get there. I intend to help out in any way I can.

Sixth Photo Meme

Posted in Photography

Derek tagged us in a meme. The challenge is to go to your Flickr stream, choose the sixth page in your photostream, then the sixth photo, and post it to your blog. Here is ours:

Capilano Suspension Bridge

And so now I will tag six others for the meme: Raul, Jeanne, Rebecca, Peter, Duane and Tod.
